Need More Than A Story?

Some things need a person, not a page

The stories here are for reflection. Some situations call for more than that, and reaching out is the right move, not a failure.

If you are in immediate danger

Contact your local emergency number now.

If you are in emotional crisis

If you are thinking about ending your life, or you feel you can’t keep yourself safe, please contact a crisis line or someone you trust today. You don’t have to wait until it gets worse.

A free directory of helplines by country is at findahelpline.com. Choose your country, then choose the topic you want to talk about. Many helpline numbers are toll-free, and many helplines are reachable by text message or online chat.

Topics this site does not cover

I left these out of the story tool on purpose, because a short story is the wrong answer to them:

  • Abuse or violence at home
  • Addiction
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself
  • Serious mental illness, or feeling that your mind is not working as it should

If any of these describe your life right now, please talk to a doctor, a counselor, a trusted person, or a helpline. Find A Helpline lets you search by topic as well as by country.

You can also reach out when it is “just” heavy

Grief that won’t ease, a low mood that has lasted weeks, a relationship that frightens you, or a feeling that things will never improve are all good reasons to talk to someone. You don’t need to be in crisis to deserve help.
